After a smooth flight and transfer, we arrived at our resort, hidden between the jungle and the sea near Mayakoba. The architecture is incredible, blending modern design with natural materials. Our suite has a private plunge pool and an outdoor shower, making it feel like our own secluded corner of the jungle. The scent of tropical flowers and the sound of birdsong immediately set a tranquil mood.
An early start meant we arrived at Chichen Itza before the crowds and the peak heat. Seeing the great pyramid of El Castillo in the morning light was breathtaking. Our private guide brought the ancient Mayan city to life, explaining the incredible astronomy and mathematics behind its construction. The scale of the site is hard to comprehend.
Today we experienced something unique to this region. We visited Zitnup Cenote near Valladolid in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, a natural limestone sinkhole filled with pure, cool freshwater. We descended a wooden staircase into a hidden cavern where shafts of light pierced the darkness, illuminating the water below. Swimming in the silent, ancient pool was a magical and refreshing experience.
We decided to see the famous Tulum ruins from a different perspective. We chartered a small yacht for a half-day trip, sailing along the coast until the iconic clifftop temples came into view. Seeing the ancient fortress from the water, with the turquoise sea in the foreground, was unforgettable. We later anchored to snorkel with sea turtles on the nearby reef.
We spent the afternoon exploring the vibrant town of Playa del Carmen. It has a completely different energy from our quiet resort. We walked along the famous Quinta Avenida, Browse the shops, before having a late lunch at a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Yucatecan cuisine. The flavours were incredible.
We took a ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres for a day of laid-back island life. We hired a golf cart, the island’s main form of transport, and explored its sandy lanes and beautiful beaches. The pace is wonderfully slow. We spent most of the day at Playa Norte, a stunning beach with shallow, calm water, before heading back in the late afternoon.
We spent our last morning simply enjoying our resort. We watched the sunrise from the beach, the sky turning from soft pink to bright blue. After a final swim, we felt completely recharged. Mexico’s blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and genuine hospitality is a powerful combination.
