Our driver met us at the airport with a cool towel and a smile. The short drive to our west coast hotel revealed glimpses of what was to come: chattel houses painted in bright colours and endless stretches of turquoise water. We settled into our suite, which opened onto a private balcony overlooking the sea, before a walk along the soft, white sand of Paynes Bay.
This morning we explored Harrison’s Cave. A quiet tram took us deep into the earth, through a network of crystallised limestone caverns. Waterfalls plunged into clear pools, and huge stalactites and stalagmites created an impressive underground world. It was a cool and peaceful escape from the midday sun.
We spent today on a private catamaran. The crew sailed us north along the platinum coast, dropping anchor in a secluded cove. We snorkelled in the clear water, swimming alongside graceful sea turtles. Lunch was served on deck; fresh fish and local salads. It was a perfect day on the water, ending with a rum punch as the sun began to set.
We visited the Mount Gay Rum Distillery to learn about the world’s oldest rum. The tour was refreshingly straightforward, explaining the simple process of turning molasses into the famous spirit. The tasting that followed was an education in itself, revealing the complex flavours of aged Bajan rum.
Today we drove to the island’s east coast. The landscape here is dramatically different. We watched the Atlantic waves crash against the shore at Bathsheba, where huge rock formations stand against the powerful sea. It felt wild and untouched, a world away from the calm of the west. We had lunch at a small hotel, enjoying the view and the fresh sea air.
We spent the morning wandering through the historic heart of Bridgetown. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a blend of colonial history and modern Bajan life. We saw the Parliament Buildings and walked across the Chamberlain Bridge, watching small fishing boats in the Careenage. It was a morning of quiet observation.
For our last evening, we booked a table at The Cliff. The restaurant is carved into the rock, with tables overlooking the sea. We watched the sky change colour as the sun went down, enjoying a simple, elegant meal. It was a calm and fitting end to our time in Barbados, an island that gets under your skin.
