We arrived at our hotel on the northern coast to a welcome glass of rum punch. Our room opens directly onto a terrace with a path leading down to the beach. The sea is incredibly calm here, and the sand is pure white. After settling in, we took a walk along the shore as the sun began to dip, feeling the stress of travel melt away.
Today we decided to explore one of the island’s famed beaches and took a short taxi ride to Ffryes Beach. It is a beautiful, undeveloped stretch of sand with exceptionally clear water. We spent the morning swimming and reading, enjoying the peace and the simple perfection of the setting.
We spent the morning at Nelson’s Dockyard. The restored 18th-century naval harbour is fascinating to walk through. The original buildings now house small museums, boutiques, and cafes. We explored the old Copper and Lumber Store before having lunch at a waterfront restaurant, watching modern yachts moor in a historic setting.
You cannot come to Antigua and not get on the water. We chartered a yacht for the day with a small crew. They sailed us out from Falmouth Harbour and along the southern coastline, pointing out secluded bays and hidden beaches. We dropped anchor for a swim before the crew prepared a fresh lunch on board. It was a highlight of our luxury holiday to Antigua.
Antigua’s black pineapple is famous for being particularly sweet. We visited a local farm for a tour to see how they are grown. It was a short, interesting visit that gave us a literal taste of the island’s unique produce and a break from the coast.
On Sunday, everyone heads to Shirley Heights for the sunset party. We arrived in the late afternoon to the sound of a steel pan band. The view over English and Falmouth Harbours is magnificent as the sun goes down. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with barbecue grills smoking and rum punch flowing. It’s a true Antiguan institution.
We spent our last morning enjoying the tranquility of our resort’s bay. An early swim in the calm, warm water was the perfect way to reflect on a week of total relaxation. Antigua’s charm is its simplicity. It doesn’t try too hard; it just is. And that is why we will be back.
