We arrived in Muscat and were struck by the city’s calm and elegant atmosphere. The buildings are all low-rise, set against a backdrop of rugged brown mountains. Our hotel, the Al Bustan Palace, is spectacular, with a grand atrium and a beautiful private beach. We spent the evening relaxing, adjusting to the warm air and the peaceful rhythm of the city.
This morning we visited the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The scale and craftsmanship are incredible, with huge, hand-woven carpets and glittering chandeliers. It is a serene and beautiful space. In the afternoon, we explored the Muttrah Souk, a labyrinth of alleyways filled with the scent of frankincense and the sight of silver jewellery and colourful textiles.
Today felt like the start of a real adventure, the beginning of our Oman private tour. Our guide drove us from the coast towards the Al Hajar mountains. The scenery changed dramatically as we climbed the winding road to Jebel Akhdar, the ‘Green Mountain’. We checked into our hotel, perched on the edge of a vast canyon. The view from our balcony is simply breathtaking.
We spent today exploring the Saiq Plateau. Our guide took us on a gentle hike along the canyon rim, through terraced farms growing pomegranates and roses. We visited abandoned villages, their mud-brick houses clinging to the cliffside. The air is fresh and cool up here, a world away from the heat of the coast.
The journey continued as we descended from the mountains and drove towards the desert. The landscape shifted to rolling golden dunes that stretched as far as the eye could see. We transferred to a 4×4 to reach our luxury desert camp. After settling into our tent, we were taken to the top of a high dune to watch a spectacular sunset in profound silence.
After watching the sunrise over the dunes, we left the desert behind and drove to the historic city of Nizwa. We explored the imposing 17th-century fort, climbing its huge circular tower for a 360-degree view of the city and the surrounding date palm oasis. It was a fascinating glimpse into Oman’s rich history before we made the final drive back to Muscat.
We spent our last morning enjoying the facilities at our Muscat hotel. A final swim in the warm, calm waters of the Gulf of Oman was the perfect end to an incredible journey through the country’s diverse landscapes. Oman is a truly special destination that gets under your skin.
